Wang Yi Meets with the Rotating Chair of the Council of Ministers of the IGAD, Chairperson of the IGAD Mediation Team on the South Sudanese Issue and Representatives of Both Conflicting Parties of South Sudan

In the morning of January 12 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met, in Khartoum, capital of Sudan, with Tedros Adhanom, the rotating chair of the Council of Ministers of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Chairperson of the IGAD mediation team on the South Sudanese issue Seyoum Mesfin, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Barnaba Marial Benjamin of South Sudan and SPLM/SPLA-in Opposition Chief Negotiator Taban Deng Gai respectively. He listened to views of all parties on the “Special Consultation in Support of the IGAD-led South Sudan Peace Process” and coordinated positions.

All the parties expressed their thanks for and welcomed this Special Consultation and relevant initiatives proposed by China, and expressed their belief that this will help push the peace process in South Sudan. China’s contribution to the peace of South Sudan means support for peace and security in Africa. Especially in the current situation, China’s initiatives and efforts are timely and particularly valuable. All the parties expressed that they attach importance to this Consultation and are willing to make joint efforts with the Chinese side to promote the peace process in South Sudan for positive progress.
